Every compressor makes water. The Atlas Copco IWD 500 (8102048041) electronic zero-loss condensate drain — the 500 l/s model in the IWD (Intelligent Water Drain) range — removes it automatically before it can cause harm. As air is compressed and then cooled, moisture drops out as condensate and pools in the receiver, filters, dryer and pipework, where left in place it corrodes the system, contaminates the air and damages the tools downstream. The liquid has to come out, but the usual fix trades one problem for another. A basic timer drain opens on a fixed schedule regardless of whether any water has actually gathered, and each time it opens it vents expensive compressed air along with the condensate.

This electronic drain solves both halves of that problem at once. As an automatic condensate drain it clears liquid without supervision, yet as a zero-loss design it loses none of your compressed air doing it. A dual-level sensor system, which uses two sensing points to confirm that liquid is genuinely collecting, opens the valve only then and closes it again before any air can slip out. The result is a sump that never sits full and a compressed air system that stops wasting energy through the drain across the year.

Reliability is built to match. Automatic cleaning cycles and an integral dirt screen filter, a mesh that traps particles carried in the condensate, keep the debris carried in condensate from jamming the mechanism and taking the drain out of service, while multiple alarms surface a fault before it turns into downtime. Installation is plug-and-play and straightforward, and servicing draws on the single universal maintenance kit shared across the IWD range. Where the drain sits outdoors or in an unheated plant room, an optional heater kit adds freeze protection for sub-zero installations.

On the numbers, the IWD 500 carries a nominal capacity of 500 l/s (roughly 1,059 cfm) of free air delivery, or FAD, and takes a maximum working pressure of 16 bar (232 psi), running from a 230 V electrical supply. Match that nominal capacity to the free air delivery of the compressor or the stage being drained, and keep within it.
